Candida Yeast cleanse

Due to the overuse of antibiotics, many of us have an overgrowth of candida yeast in our system. This upset of the natural flora and fauna in our system releases toxins into our bloodstream, resulting in a myriad of symptoms.

Jeffrey S. McCombs claims to have the best plan to combat and cleanse from candida yeast, superior to other methods that have failed. However, the six steps must all be followed strictly, or don't even start he states. One of the steps is sweating 6 times a week, so this is going to take some dedication! Its a sixteen-week+ cleanse, too. He says its simple, though. It includes:

1. the diet
2. a sweating regimen
3. water consumption
4. anti-fungal supplement (Candida Force)
5. detox supplement (Detox Essentials, basically vitamin C), and
6. acidophilus supplement (Flora Prime 5 capsules 2 times a day 20-30 minutes before meals)

Above are his recommendations for supplements, which he gets no moneys from but are available through his web site.

It has performed miracles for people that felt hopeless and were labeled by doctors as "hypochondriacs." The saunas are not optional, and remove lots of symptoms and toxins from deep within the tissues. Can't wait to do that.

My question is, since he states we have over 500 naturally occuring symbiotic bacteria in our system, 300-400 living in the gut, how are we to restore all 500 after they're wiped out by antibiotics?

Update Nov 5, 2010:
Read the whole book, and while his cleanse is highly recommended by Kevin Trudeau, author of "Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About," McCombs has some pretty strange health philosophies and theories.

My doctor said the basic cleanse (if it doesn't contain the wormwood) from the RENEW plan would be okay during breastfeeding, as would the liver cleanse, and saunas. The heavy metal cleanse she recommended not doing, as when you're detoxing, the toxins can exit through the breast milk. So, why would I want to do any? Also, its okay to use probiotics and acidophilus supplements during breastfeeding, but not the pills that actively destroy the yeast overgrowth. I was a little concerned, as with all three children I will have been on antibiotics for strep B during labor, which upset the balance of bacteria in the gut and could lead to a yeast overgrowth.

I had to go to the library to check out a whole bunch of books using the subject keyword "detox diet" to find out more about detoxing. I've learned we're all toxic, its deep in our tissues and especially our fat, and I wanted to know how to get rid of it; particularly heavy metals. The book "The Detox Strategy: Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps" by Brenda Watson, C.N.C., with Leonard Smith, M.D., gives the most specific advise, and I felt like she knew what she was talking about.

Her five step plan to RENEW is to:
1. Reduce exposure to toxins in your environment. She explains a few ways we get toxins in our systems, from water systems, chemicals we clean with, and chemicals in our clothes and bedding. Once educated, we can try our best to avoid them.

2. Eliminate Toxins in your body. The body has natural toxin elimination processes, mainly through the liver, but also in six other channels of elimination: the lungs, the liver, the colon, kidneys, skin, blood, and lymph.

3. Nourish your cells and systems. She tells what to eat and drink.*

4. Energize your body, mind, and spirit. (Exercise)

5. Wellness-putting it all together.

On page 100 she tells of four specific cleanses that are recommended, using supplements found in health food stores.

Step One: Total-body basic cleanse (duration: two weeks) (always start with this, then move on to advanced if you want)

Step Two: Total-body advanced cleanse (duration: thirty days)

Step Three: Targeted liver cleanse (30 days, optional)

Step Four: Targeted heavy metal cleanse (30 days, optional)

To aid in the cleansing process she recommends other helps such as digestive enzymes, supplements, dry brushing, saunas, whatever you can do. Too bad I can't do any cleanses while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding. Can't wait. See also the candida yeast cleanse.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO)

My husband and I learned from "The Beautiful Truth" how one doctor/researcher theorized that we don't actually get colds from our nose but through our ears, and that by placing hydrogen peroxide in the ears and letting it sit for five or so minutes can prevent a coming cold from breaking. My husband read on the net to have it at room temperature, because the cold hydrogen peroxide in the ears can cause dizziness.

Kevin Trudeau states in his book Natural Cures that using hydrogen peroxide and dimethyl sulfoxide intraveneously is one cure for cancer, stiffled because it doesn't bring in the big bucks like chemo. (Evenidently, he claims, chemotherapy is mustard gas, or a version of it, similar to that used in the Second World War to gas prisoners.)

GDP vs. GPI

Our official national yardstick doesn't allow us to subtract the oil spills, car accidents, energy waste, and lawsuits from the GDP, to come up with a more sensible assessment on how we are really doing. In terms of GDP, the economic hero is a terminal cancer patient going through a messy divorce, whose sports car is totaled in an accident that was his fault. The data from his misfortunes make the GDP go up. But the reasonably happy guy with a solid marriage who cooks at home, walks to work and doesn't smoke or gamble is an economic nobody, in the eyes of economists." -David Wann in Simple Prosperity

The movie "The Corporation" repeats this point, saying "economists need to learn to subtract."

Lead

The following can be found in Healthy Child, Whole Child by Ditchek and Greenfield, both M.D.s.

Children are exposed to lead mostly through dust, dirt, and water. Lead poisoning results in lowered IQ, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, and criminal behavior. Early exposure to lead shrinks areas of the brain associated with attention, decision making, and emotional control. "The optimal level for lead in the blood is zero. Federal safe blood-lead levels are set at 10 mcg/dL, though it's known that damage occurs at even lower levels. Reducing our children's exposure to lead will be an expensive undertaking that may require government subsidy, but must be done."

Ways to reduce lead exposure:
1. Buy a testing kit with wipes that turn color in the presence of lead, especially if you live in an older home. Move out during any remodels. Wipe down walls regularly and take off shoes to reduce amount of dust tracked in.

2. Have your child's blood-levels checked at 10-12 mos. and at 2 years.

3. Make sure your children eat foods rich in calcium and iron. Pregnant women need adequate calcium so lead is not drawn from their bones into the blood supply.

4. Test household water for lead using an inexpensive screening kit. Replace pipes if they are accessible and appear to be a problem, or get a filter.

5. Dispose of thermometers, batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, etc., as hazardous waste.

6. Request lead checks of schools, day care facilities, community centers, wherever children spend time.

7. Avoid fish and get omega-3 fatty acids through a purified fish oil supplement instead. Check state-by-state freshwater warnings at www.epa.gov.

8. Do not give your children patent remedies from China, India, Mexico, or the Caribbean, which are responsible for up to 30 percent of all cases of childhood lead poisoning.

9. Some candle wicks contain lead as a stiffener, which put enough lead into the air to exceed children's safe daily lead intake. Look for candles guaranteed to be lead free, and be careful in tightly closed rooms.

Clean Up Your Diet

This book by Max Tomlinson is full of beautiful pictures of fruits and vegetables, discusses how to avoid contaminants in our bodies, and offers four detox diets, all in either a weekend, one-week, or four week plan. For each diet there's a menu plan and recipes, so its all ready to try. I'm pretty excited. Just need to replace the blender we broke this month.

It also offers ailment plans. I found mine: Hay Fever. I don't know how strictly I'll have to stick to this diet, it sounds pretty rough. It says 1. avoid typical allergens, such as wheat and dairy, 2. eat more organic fruits and veggies high in antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E, and the mineral zinc, 3. avoid inflamatory foods such as red meat and eggs which contain arachidonic acid, and perhaps also tomatoes, egglplant, bell pepper, chili, white potato and tobacco (all also inflammatory), and 4. eat local honey so I get used to local pollen.

Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About

I'm reading this book right now, Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About, by Kevin Trudeau, and its really good. Its amazing how corporate money is totally leading our lives. Read more about his book at the end of my detox post.

Presidents of the church say that learning how herbs and other natural remedies can cure us is a part of provident living. Aren't there over 4,000+ to learn? That's a lot to catch up on, especially when we've been so handicapped to just take drugs and not learn anything.

Detox

In the past I've had the philosophy "A little dirt won't hurt," ie., what doesn't kill me will only make me stronger: Bring it on! All my learning about the poisons we're exposed to, and how they affect our health, though, leads me want to detox. I Googled it briefly, and this is what I found.

How to detox:

Our body naturally detoxes using: 1. Pee 2. Poo 3. breathing (deep breathing exercises?) 4. sweat (as in exercise or using a hot sauna) - That's good news. So, drinking a lot of water helps detox. Unfortunately, pure water is hard to come by, unless filtered or distilled from fluoride, chlorine, and other heavy metals. Fiber naturally helps move bowels. There's also pills to help (Dr. cleanse, nutura) and enemas. See the Gerson coffee bean enema used on cancer patients.

5. Using a special diet of commonly non-allergenic foods and lots of organic fruits and vegetables. We don't want to add anything new (pesticides, herbicides) to the body to add to the burden, and get the nutrients in from fruits and veggies to aid in detox. Using a green leafy vegetable can be a detox. (Also good news. Easy enough. Sounds kind of whimpy, though, if the government already recommends 3 a week.) See which vegetables are green leafy.

Here's two videos on detoxing (very good) by the psychtruth clinic from Dr. Bellonzi (describes how and why to cleanse) plus a second video. Avoid extreme detox plans out there!

Additionally, in the case of mercury or lead toxicity there's chelation therapy.

Once we are detoxed, in order to prevent wrecking what we've just achieved, its good to kind of stay in this range of eating, close to these diets. But detoxing is usually a short-term diet that you can come off of. Its also important to avoid use of heavy chemicals in cleaners, on our lawns, in our cookware, wherever they're found.

6. Many toxins are excreted from our body to our tongue, so scraping the tongue when one first gets up with a wooden popsicle stick helps to detox.

My landlady says that ion foot bath detox works, as do specific brand of shoe inserts (see 1, 2, 3). Sounds crazy, huh? Her daughter in law was relieved of back pain and fatigue. Then, there's pure organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and lemons, too.

What am I specifically looking to detox from? The environmental toxins aluminum, lead, mercury, cadmium, fluoride, MSG, aspartame, pesticides, herbicides, industrial solvents, food dyes, and excessive vaccinations (see end of Behavior and Nutrition video). "All of these play an important role in brain toxicity, brain function, and your behavior" says Dr. Blaylock. I don't know if just a diet will expel all of these, or if it takes chelation therapy in the case of heavy metals. Additionally, estrogens in the environment are difficult to avoid; I doubt they're able to be removed, just avoided. We have lots of estrogens introduced to our environment through modern production such as BPA, PCBs, and pthalates.

Of course besides bodily detox, its also vital to spiritually detox. (See video)
Kevin Trudeau states that the words we say, the things we watch on TV, all contribute to our ability to combat disease. These things can build up more toxins in our system. Many times stress relief can be a very effective cure, even for cancer.

I didn't even realize while writing this that I had a detox diet plan right on my shelf. This book is wonderful, complete with a daily menu and recipes for detoxing over a weekend, in a week, or doing a one-month diet, for either a digestion, energy, ailment, or overall cleanse. No MSG cookbooks

Any cookbook will likely have MSG-free recipes in it, you just have to know what you're looking for. Its nice to have one that you can trust, though, and we checked out Battling the MSG Myth: A Survival Guide and Cookbook by Debby Anglesey through WSU interlibrary loan. Available for $21 at msgmyth.com. She has delicious recipes in here, and there is so much additional knowledge you have to know to avoid MSG, not just reading labels, and you can get it from her book. She does still have recipes with a lot of sugar, which is also hazardous to our health, but I love how she sneaks shredded carrots and other veggies in her main entrees. Its a pretty complete book for anything you'd want to make from salad dressings to sauces to candy, and contains education all about the MSG myth and shopping tips.
Debby's not the only one that has written a cookbook. Here's another one called No MSG For Me by Lisa Kramer, available in many locales on the web.

Behavior and Nutrition

Highlights of this video:

Pregnant women can influence the life of their child to the point of determining their hypertension or breast cancer risk, by their diet in utero.

Relation of sugar and hyperactivity. The two biggest food sources that contribute to our sugar consumption are sodas and fruit juices.

The brain is constantly rebuilding itself. Some parts of the brain rebuild in decades, some as fast as two weeks. DHA fatty acid is essential for brain function, and if the brain has a deficiency of DHA for two weeks, it has an affect on how the brain rebuilds itself.

Hypoglycemia can imitate neurosis, hysteria, neurasthenia, and even psychosis. Associated with anxiety schizophrenia.

Crime and nutrition: change diet, probation violations decreased 86%. The more violent offenders, the more deficient the diet. Even marginal deficiencies in nutrition can lead to behavioral problems. Change the diet, and behaviors and drug use are dramatically reduced.

Consuming high calorie, high sugar diets, results in lots of free radicals= every cell in your body will age faster. Leads to Alzheimer's.

Treat an alcoholic for hypoglycemia, and get a 71% rate of recovery from alcoholism. Treat an alcoholic with Alcoholics Anonymous and get a 25% rate of recovery. Ninety-seven percent of alcoholics are hypoglycemic, vs. 18% for controls. Most of the crimes, most of the auto accidents in U.S. are connected to alcohol.

SSR drugs for depression are supposed to make serotonin levels go up, but in some people it makes serotonin levels go down, and these are kids that end up getting suicidal.

A study removed food dyes and had dramatic results. The biggest behavioral reactions to food dyes are to Yellow 5 and sodium benzoate. Another common behavioral reaction is to soy.

People are consuming lots of soy, thinking it prevents breast cancer, and it doesn't.

Serotonin helps repress aggressive acts, controls suicide and depression. Corn is very low in tryptophan (serotonin).

National Nutritional Survey of Adolescents
60% deficient in iron
57% in vitamin A
43% in vitamin C
39% in vitamin B1
30% in protein
16% in riboflavin

Niacin has a lot to do with mental illness. Other nutrients associated with behavior are vitamins C, D, E, K, A, B, and carotenoids.

Food allergies affecting the brain. Many symptoms are subtle or purely neurological and people don't even know they have them. Lists many symptoms. (Lethargy, stupor, disorientation, paranoia, delusions, hallucination, agitation, rage, panic attacks, criminal behavior, and even seizures) Also lists common food allergens.

Schizophrenic study:
88% schizophrenics allergic to wheat
60% to milk
50% to corn
100% to either gliaden or gluten
As long as they avoided gliaden or gluten they were normal. When they got back on it, even a small amount, all their schizophrenic symptoms came back and they had to be hospitalized.

Vaccinations. Create an immune reaction that will not subside for years. Create an inflamed brain. Causes autism, etc.

Animal saturated fat impairs brain function; omega 3-fatty acids, DHA, and arachidonic acid improve brain function.

Rage and violence occurs with deficient levels of DHA, with MSG, or even very small amounts of lead.

We're getting way too many omega 6 fats and not enough omega 3 fats, but the ratio between the two is very important. At the turn of the century our diet ratio was about 1:2, and now its about 1:46. Omega 6 comes from corn oil, canola, peanut, safflower, etc. Omega 3 from walnuts, flax, fish.

Artificial estrogen is a brain toxin.

You'll just feel so smart after finishing this video, and feel there's so much more to learn! He's a great speaker, knows what he's talking about, and a well-researched brain neurosurgeon. He has a short sum-up at the end.

He has also written a book Health and Nutrition Secrets, and I don't know what parts of that book play here in this video.

Politically Incorrect Nutrition

I'm clueless as to what to write about this book. Impossible to summarize, it is a great book. My husband checked it out two years ago, and I was skeptical at first. How are we to believe these things against all conventional wisdom?

It is so well written, convincing, and amazing, how we're all wrong about what we're eating. It follows the actual studies instead of the lies we keep repeating in magazines, via dietitians, doctors, etc. He's very well read and brings to light many myths. This, from Amazon.com:

One more thing I'd say: If you're like me, you're sick of every "fad" wisdom. Even though this information sounds new to us, he doesn't stand alone on these issues. This is what doctors and scientists are trying to tell us, but up against all the propaganda, and we may not hear it.

How to Lower Your Fat Thermostat

How do you summarize an entire book? Well, I cheated and used their summary:

The authors theorize that each person has a "thermostat" for weight that their body oscillates around. For some its higher, others lower. There are a few ways to lower your fat thermostat.

1. Exercise will lower the set point

2. Decrease the fat in your diet
excess fat in the diet will get stored on the body. (I'd have to argue this one somewhat, because our low-fat diets have gone to extremes; fat is an essential part of the diet.)

3. Decrease your intake of refined carbohydrates
Refined carbohydrates flood the body with a sudden rush of glucose. This triggers insulin to be released to break down the glucose. "In the presence of excess insulin, a disproportionate share of the sugar in the bloodstream is converted to fat and deposited in the fat stores. Excess insulin also seems to inhibit or slow the breakdown of fats for the energy needs of the body. This combination leads to more reliance on sugar as the major fuel source, a more rapid use of the ingested sugars, the need for more frequent eating, the eating of larger volumes of food, and a preference for sugars in the diet. It also leads to an increase in fat stores and the protection of those fat stores." (p 79)

They use a term called "refined carbohydrate unit" which I think today is called a glycemic index, to identify foods that will have this insulin-fat storage affect on the body. Foods with high glycemic indices are potatoes, white rice, white flour, white sugar. See Natalie's video on glycemic index. In my opinion, this is why the Adkins diet works: we're eating too much white flour, white sugar, and potatoes! But the Adkins diet is not sustainable. We need carbohydrates; and veggies, fruits, and whole grains are fine and don't cause weight gain like refined carbohydrates do.

4. Reduce intake of high-calorie density foods

5. Stop drinking calorie-containing fluids or eating in response to thirst
Drink plenty of water.


6. Eat in harmony with the hunger drives of the body
Eat when you're hungry, stop before you're full. It takes time to get in tune with what our bodies are saying, because so many of us have binged/denied ourselves for so long. Our body knows what its doing. Starvation diets trigger a natural survival technique of the body to go into a hibernation mode and store fat. Thus, yo-yo dieters' bodies (or those with very low calorie diets) get stingier and stingier with energy storage and their bodies are more prone to gain weight.

7. Get proper nutrition
If you're deficient in a certain vitamin, even if your body has had its caloric needs met, its still going to be craving food in an attempt to get nourished.

The following excerpts are from Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills Chapter 4"Glutamate type-neurons control every neuroendocrine function of the hypothalamus. This neuroendocrine function is designed to control the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, reproductive functions, gonadal function, body growth, and certain aspects of metabolism. But in addition, glutamate controls all the other functions of the hypothalamus, such as the biological clock, the autonomic nervous system, sleep-wake cycles, hunger and satiety, the emotions of anger and rage, and even consciousness itself.

"So we see that anything that disrupts or impairs the normal functioning of the hypothalamus can have devastating effects on the organism as a whole. Early exposure in life to high doses of glutamate, or the other excitotoxins, could theoretically produce a whole array of disorders much later in life, such as obesity, impaired growth, endocrine problems, sleep difficulties, emotional problems including episodic anger, and sexual psychopathology.

"Whether such changes would be reversible or not depends on the dose of excitotoxin given, the timing of the dose, and how long the child was exposed to high doses of excitotoxins. As for timing, we know that for glutamate, the earlier the exposure to the toxin, the more likely is permanent damage. If exposure is delayed until several years after birth, the injury may be less severe. It is also possible that some neurons are injured but not killed. We know that subtoxic concentrations of glutamate can alter the function of hypothalamic neurons without destroying them. Also, earlier exposure would increase the likelihood of abnormal wiring of the circuits within the hypothalamus. So parents, it is important to stop your child's exposure to excitotoxins now!" The Vitamin Puzzle

The following is what I remember from Vitamin Puzzle by Ann E Weiss, Malcolm E Weiss, and Pat De Aloe available in hardcover from Amazon.com for $.01. Okay, this just proves I'm not an expert on anything when I bounce all the way to the second grade where Mrs. Askins, my teacher at Sunnyside Elementary in Pullman, WA, read us this book.

This book tells the history of how we came to find out about vitamins in food, and the part I remember well enough to tell is a story Mrs. Askins read to us with such animation and postceded by a small discussion to see if we got the story. It was wartime, perhaps WWI, and the government was feeding the military. It wanted to give its military the finest, so it shipped them loads of white rice, which was the latest fine food which had the brown hulls stripped away to make it a real fancy treat for the hardworking men and women.

The military broke out in scurvy, and come to find out, the brown hulls which had been stripped away were actually full of nutrients necessary for well-being. Thus came the realization of vitamins, their role and importance, and since then we have been fortifying our food with synthetic vitamins and minerals as mandated per the FDA.

Strange stories

Meniere's disease

"I got a call in Feb. 1999 from Robert Cupp. His story goes like this:

One and a half years ago he was slated for brain surgery to cut a nerve that his doctor told him would stop his spinning dizziness from Meniere's disease, a procedure that might leave him with a need to relearn certain motor skills. He'd already suffered what doctors thought were heart attacks requiring defibrillation. But when his heart showed no damage from these attacks, he was tested for a brain tumor. After the horrible dizziness and nausea began, the next step was this serious surgery. Meanwhile his mother found www.msgmyth.com, ordered the book and Robert gave MSG elimination a try. Well, his symptoms disappeared! A chiropractor friend tested him with a little bit of Accent under his tongue and had him lie on his stomach on the table. The chiropractor watched in amazement as three vertibrae moved out of place and his leg pulled into it's socket as muscles contracted (burning backache or sciatic conditions may often be a result of MSG). When Robert reported what he had learned to the surgeon and told him that he didn't need surgery after all, the surgeon told him that he was talking nonsense and that he had better be in for his scheduled surgery or not to bother coming back at all. Needless to say, Robert didn't. He called to thank me for saving him from an awful fate." (Anglesey, 62)

Fibromyalgia

"A clinical pharmacist, Jerry Smith, from the University of Florida found our web site and contacted us for more information. He has written a case report on Fibromyalgia patients whose symptoms markedly improved after decreasing the MSG in their diets. With the help of their physicians, he submitted the report to the JAMA for publication in 1998. We can only hope that more doctors will become alerted to the real dangers of MSG, aspartame, and other excitotoxins as a result. Debbie Hypes has compiled a list of over 100 people who were diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and who were "cured by excitotoxin eliminatoin. More scientific studies and cold hard facts will eventually make a difference in this uphill battle. We increasingly hear from FMS patients who, after using the information in our book, are symptom free or notice a decrease in symptoms." (Anglesey, 58)

Crohn's Disease

"I have always reacted to MSG but until I had my son 14 years ago it wasn't debilitating. After I had him I sttarted to get migraines, suffer from severe depression, mood swings, exhaustion, I was 50 pounds overweight, etc. I found Debby's site about 5 years ago when I was doing a search for food allergy triggers. I omitted MSG but didn't pay a lot of attention to the hidden names for it until about 8 months ago when I had to do something about my daughter's physical and mental heath. She was diagnosed as bipolar and taking Paxil, she had an ulcer and was taking Aciphix, she was put on Antivert for dizziness, the doctor said that she was developing Crohn's Disease... she was barely 18 at the time. She went totally off the wall when she went away to college and its was over summer break that I knew that we had to do something. Multiple symptoms

"'I began suffering from extreme migraines. I would become nauseous and would often vomit. The emergency room was the only relief quite a few times. I saw doctors at Johns Hopkins and spent $150 on different medicines, to no avail. Doctors said it was stress. I started getting sick a lot which was out of the ordinary. Heart Palpitations

Depression

She screwed up two days ago and ate some msg just chancing it at a party and her husband found her on the floor unconscious with blood sugar of 30 in the middle of the night. Another CNA at my work place went to the hospital for chronic bouts of abdominal pain. She had several diagnoses. I told her to stop the hourly diet sodas (aspartame), she did, and she is pain free. I could go on and on. I am spreading the word. But for every one that listens, another laughs and refuses to believe it is this simple.

Holidays

"Christmas and other holidays are more difficult for avoidance. This is the time in the past when we have been headachy and sick from November to January. NO MORE!! We cannot enjoy these dinners anywhere else but home because most people cook with extra seasonings and MSG laden turkeys and hams at this time of year. My daughter had a hard time not eating her in-laws' meals, feeling rude if she didn't. Knowing that they contained MSG ingredients, she hoped there wouldn't be enough in the meal to hurt her. Within half an hour she felt the familiar wooziness and flushing and headache beginning. They checked over labels as her husband pointed out ingredient after ingredient. They finally realized she'd be happier eating a peanut butter sandwich than nursing a 3-day migraine with little children to take care for. Now they scramble to make sure there is something for her to eat. So don't be afraid to take care of yourself and speak up for yourself. Diabetics get respect and MSG sensitive people need to insist on it, too." (Anglesey, 43)

Headaches

"For years since about the age of five, Alex always felt dizzy, growling stomach, she threw up often and had headaches. Always her doctor would test the sugar levels and tell me there was nothing wrong with her. We went to the neurologist because of the dizziness and the vision problems that started occurring at about age seven.

On and on through the years we coped with headaches, body aches, neck aches, dizziness and her inability to learn her lines (she studied acting). At 19, Alex couldn't function anymore. She had a headache everyday. Could not go out with her friends for fear of getting ill and having to run home with a headache. Often going to the hospital for shots when the headache reached a "10". So, she decided to do something about it and started going to many doctors. She had her wisdom teeth removed. Her sinuses were operated on. She went to yoga classes. She got glasses but she kept getting worse. My 10 year old child would lie in my arms with dark circles, chills, shivers, headaches, and many tears shed. I grew desperate and helpless. Anaphylactic shock

"I began with symptoms of lightheadedness and diarrhea which became progressively worse over the years. After eating in a restaurant, I had a "reaction" with anaphylactic shock. I awoke in the emergency department seven hours later with a severe facial injury due to the fall when I lost consciousness. I was intubated, had facial x-rays and a head CT scan while unconscious. Adrenalin was administered which saved my life.

"I was lucky- there was a physician at the restaurant at the time of my "reaction" who knew what was going on and insisted that ambulance personnel not try to treat me at the scene but to get me directly to the hospital which was minutes away. This physician who was in the restaurant came to see me before my release from the hospital and she stressed the importance of not believing anyone who told me this was not MSG induced. I had a battery of tests after my release, all inconclusive. People do not wan tot believe that something they consider so benign can be deadly. I am living proof that MSG is not benign to all people but feel as though I am on my own as far as protecting myself." (Sharon)

Seizures

"You would think we would learn. We ordered out pizza from Papa Johns and my son had one piece. He had a seizure during that night and again last night and has several little ones throughout the day. He hadn't had a seizure for four weeks and I let my guard down just once and boom!! I am so angry at what MSG does to his little system. We had been doing so well and I thought that if he got a little he could handle it. How wrong was I." (Sue M.)

Aspartame

"The Aspartame Consumer Safety Network, Inc., has received over 600 pilot related calls. Pilots call to tell about their discovery that aspartame caused several of them to lose their licenses to fly because they were unaware at the time that the diet shake, sodas, or aspartame sweetened coffee they had been consuming had any relation to symptoms that could have caused fatal results. They have described terrible in-flight incidents which involved seizures, vertigo, tremors, temporary black outs, visual problems, convulsions, disorientation, confusion, and loss of memory. One pilot said, since the FDA hasn't addressed the issue and declared it unsafe, the FAA can't recognize aspartame reactions in their regulations. He was able to retain his job by agreeing to go through and alcohol rehab center with his doctor using some syndrome name on his report. He had never had an alcohol problem, but he was forced to go through the motions just for the record. Another pilot, USAF Major Michael Collings, testified at the third Senate hearing on the safety of aspartame. He related that he remembered that he was free of tremors whenever he flew to remote areas where there was no access to diet soda or sugar-free Kool Aid. But his tremors eventually because so severe that a grand mal seizure finally hospitalized him and ended his flying career. He even had to turn down two invitations to join the prestigious Thunderbirds. He eventually learned of the cause of his seizures in 1985.

"Another pilot, willing to reveal his experiences, is George E. Leighton, whose vision became so blurred that he could not read panel instruments and narrowly avoided an accident in landing. He said that even partial impairment to a pilot can have tragic results. Leighton now tries to spread the word to other pilots and he investigates suspicious flying incidents. After submitting a letter to the editor of the U.S. Air Force "Flying Safety" magazine, they printed an "Aspartame Alert" to all Air Force pilots. In his letter, he mentioned that certain individuals in government have used their power to misdirect the FDA, the FAA, and the DOD about the safety of aspartame because of special interests. He went so far as to say that if some of these people had not intervened, a grand jury would, more than likely, have indicted some of the producers of aspartame for fraud and criminal behavior in the concealment of the dangerous effects of aspartame from the FDA. It is pilot Leighton's opinion that lives and careers are being risked and that aspartame is just as dangerous to pilots and their flight crews as a faulty instrument or other component." ALS

"I have received calls from several patients suffering from ALS [amyotrophic lateral sclerosis] who have told me that their doctors, who staff some of the largest ALS clinics and research centers in the country, confidentially tell them to avoid MSG and aspartame.
